1. GEORGE¹ ROSS, was born presumably in Scotland about 1629 and died probably in Elizabeth, New Jersey after 1670. He married at New Haven, Connecticut in 1658, CONSTANCE LITTLE.
Children of George and Constance (Little) Ross:
Sources and Notes: George Ross was born around 1629. The family tradition was that he was a Scots soldier captured at the Battle of Dunbar in 1650 or of Worcester in 1651. He may have worked in the Saugus Iron Works in Lynn, MA. He was in New Haven, CT, then went to NJ about 1670. (Source: The Ross Family of New Jersey, by Robert Ross.)
In 1658, in New Haven, he married Constance Little and in the same year he was admitted a free man. (Source: History of Elizabeth, New Jersey by Rev. E. F. Hatfield, 1868, page 167, cited by Robert Ross.) The date, 1658, would fit in with the theory that he was a prisoner and was an indentured servant for 6-7 years. ~ Written and submitted by Eleanor Hall

“I too am a descendant of Daniel Cone through his son Caleb. We, my wife and I, recently visited Haddam, CT and made all the connections down to my great grandfather which then made it very easy to complete the link to my mother who was a Cone, the last so named in our family. One of our ancestors also was very prominent in the settling of nearby Westminster, VT. It is a short trip up the Connecticut River in today’s standards by vehicle, but much longer 200 +/- yrs. ago.” ~ Steven Fuller
“I am glad I discovered the Scottish Prisoners of War website, as this topic has interested me for many years. In fact, I wrote a book about my Scottish ancestor, Daniel Cone, which is referenced in a number of comments on your site.
As an academic researcher, I went searching for primary sources in Massachusetts and Connecticut, where I grew up, and found some, which fleshed out Daniel’s story well enough that I had the documentary evidence around which I could weave a “biographical novel.” It is extensively annotated with my sources and the logic of my reasoning.
Daniel Cone was born say 1626 (based on age at death) place unknown. He may have been the first “Cone” in America, and nothing is really known of his origins. The first record to surface for him is in 1657, possibly New London area of Connecticut.
In 1662, he receives a land grant for FOUR acres along the Connecticut River from the Connecticut Colony. The area becomes known as Haddam, CT.
He first married Mahitable Spencer, daughter of Jared and Alice Spencer, then of Hartford, CT. Jared Spencer settled at Newtown (now Cambridge), Mass, in 1634; removed to Lynn, Mass, in 1637, to Hartford, CT, in 1660 or before, and to Haddam, CT in 1662, being one of the founders of that new town. Mahitable was born in 1642, at Lynn [Mass], and died at Haddam in 1691.
Daniel Cone and Mahitable Spencer had 10 children from about 1660 to 1682: 1. 2. Ruth, 1662, place of birth unk. 3. Hannah, 1664 in Haddam, CT. 4. Daniel, 21 Jan 1666; died 15 Jun 1725 5. Jared, 1668 6. Rebecca, 1670 7. Ebenezer, bap. 1673 8. Nathaniel, bap. 1675 9. Stephen, bap. 1678 10. Caleb, bap. 1682
The odds are pretty good that Daniel met Mahitable in Lynn, MA where the Saugus Iron Works are located. In 1660 she would have been 18. Did he marry her and then travel with her family to CT?
Daniel married second, in 1692, Rebecca, a widow of Richard Walkley of Haddam, CT.
He died 24 Oct 1706 in Haddam, CT, at the age of 80.
