SOURCES AND NOTES:
James was a former Scottish soldier having been captured in the Battle of Worcester between Scotland and England in Sep 1651 and sent with 500 others to serve their terms in the colonies. Records show that James arrived on board the “John and Sarah” from London, November 11,1651, Captain John Greene. The passenger list shows other passengers on board named Ross. He served in Sudbury, MA against the Indians in King Phillip’s War and later at an advanced age in the Narragansett expedition under Capt. Mosley in 1676. Mary originally refused to marry James which presented a serious problem in this Puritan community of Sudbury, MA. Mary later recanted and married James and they parented eight additional children. It is recorded that James received 39 lashes for his indiscretion with Mary, but it appears that he was later accepted into the family as he and Mary purchased the homestead of Mary’s father Thomas Goodenow in Sudbury when he moved to Marlboro. Mary was later mentioned in the will of her father.”

2. ii. INFANT MCLEOD, b. 1675?; died 22 Aug 1675

NOTES:

I ran across some primary source materials for Mordecai McLeod, which may be useful in expanding on his profile page.

Records from NEHGS’ American Ancestors listing individuals killed in Indian raids, describe Mordecai McLeod as “a Scotsman.” I have attached a snippet from the Middlesex Register since this is some evidence that he may have been a SPOW. Citation: Massachusetts: Vital Records, 1621-1850 (Online Database: AmericanAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2001-2016). https://www.americanancestors.org/DB190/i/13320/15/238394852

I saw from his profile page that there was no information as to his date of marriage to Lydia Lewis. He married Lydia in Lancaster, Massachusetts on 31st 11th month 1670 (31 January 1670 OS). Lydia’s surname is not given in the record; she is just referred to as “his wife.” Citation: Family Search (https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog) Middlesex County, Massachusetts, Pulsifer, Births, Marriages and Deaths, 1671-1745, Middlesex County (Massachusetts), FHL Film 892250, Item 2, FHL DGS 7009675; digital image 206 of 760, last accessed March 10, 2019.

I see from his profile page that the birthdate of his daughter, Hannah was guesstimated. Hannah was born in Lancaster, Massachusetts on 16th day 9th Month 1671 (16 November, 1671 (OS)). I have attached a snippet view of the entry from the transcribed records in the event we want to update his profile page. “The 17th of Janiae, 1662, a Tickett granted and given out to John Roy, of Charlestowne, for the Cutting and Carring of twelve cord fire wood from of the Comon, on Mistick side, by Selectmns order. James Cart, Recorder” Henry H. Edes, ed., A Report of the Record Commissioners Containing Charlestown Land Records, 1638 – 1802, (Boston: Rockwell and Churchill, 1883), 83.

From the old book published in 1913 by Lucien Thompson, History of Durham, New Hampshire (two volume set, vol. 2 was done by Everett Stackpole), there is an entry about Alexander MacDonell, John Roy‘s cousin. This part was under the section called “Exiles from Scotland” in Vol 1:
“The following deposition is found in Boston among the papers pertaining to the settlement of his estate: The testimony of Phillip Cheasly aged about forty six years saith that about ten dais before Ellexander MagDunell was drowned being att the sd deponents house heard the sd MagDunell say that if he died that he would give all that he had to his cosen John Roye livinge att Charlestown and further saith not.” dated 2 Feb. 1663.

Another little bit says this –
“Allexander MackDouel (often times in the old printing of text, “u’s” were used when an “n” was not available), was taxed at Oyster River in 1661, and his estate was taxed in 1663. He was drowned between York [Maine] and Dover [NH], 16 Jan. 1663, and his property was awarded to a kinsman, John ROY of Charlestown, Mass.”

RE: William Monrow

According to local and family tradition, William was a Scottish survivor of the Battle of Worcester, although his name does not appear specifically on the John and Sara transport list. (A “Monrow” on the document whose first name was torn or obliterated is believed to have been William.)[13] Other Munro prisoners accompanied William on the John and Sara, including a John, Robert and Hugh “Monrow,” but apparently they were not close kin, and the other men served their indentures far away from William in Plymouth Colony.[14]

William began his indenture in the Menotomy area of Cambridge, Massachusetts (now the town of Arlington) for millwright John Adams.[15] Later William worked for and rented land from Joseph Cooke of Cambridge[16] (whose brother Thomas coincidentally fought for Cromwell at the Battle of Worcester).[17]

William remained single for the first thirteen years after his arrival in Massachusetts, finally marrying about 1665. His bride was Martha George, whose father once worked for Massachusetts governor John Winthrop but now faced trouble with Puritan authorities for founding an illegal Baptist church in Charlestown.[18] Martha died a few years later, leaving William to raise four young children.[19] He remarried, to 20-year-old Mary Ball of Watertown, a woman with a troubled past. (Her parents were in and out of court on charges of beatings and neglect, amid hints that the mother was insane, and Mary herself had suffered judicial sanctions for an out-of-wedlock child.)[20] William brought stability to Mary’s life; married twenty years, they had ten children together.[21] His third wife was Elizabeth Johnson Wyer (widow of a Scots tailor from Charlestown).[22]

Gradually William purchased small pieces of land in Cambridge Farms, and by 1695 joined with sons and a son-in-law to purchase 100 acres;[23] his area of town came to be known locally as “Scotland.”[24] With increased landholdings came greater status in the community. He was made a freeman, chosen as one of the town Selectmen, and admitted as a member of the church.[25] When he died on January 27, 1718, he was one of Lexington’s most respected citizens.[26]

Other Scots from the John and Sara settled near William Munro, but some were not so fortunate.
