Name Variations: Mackontoss, Tosh, MacIntosh, Mackintosh, Toych, McIntoych, Mactosh
First Generation in the New World
1.WILLIAM¹ TOSH [Mackontoss], was born presumably in Scotland about 1635 and died in Rhode Island in 1685. He married at Braintree, Norfolk, Massachusetts on 07 Feb 1660, JAEL SWILVAN [Sullivan].3 Jael is believed to be an Irish lass brought to the colony in 1654.4
Biographical Notes:
“wm Mackontoss” was a Scottish Prisoner of War and on the ship John and Sara. See “Scotch Prisoners Sent to Massachusetts in 1652, by Order of the English Government,” The New England Historical and Genealogical Register.
WILLIAM TOSH (or MACINTOSH), m. Jael Sullivan Feb. 7, 1660 says the Braintree record. He is thought to be the William Mackintosh or MacIntosh who was one of the Scottish prisoners sent to New England in 1651 after the Battle of Dunbar [should be Battle of Worcester]. His wife, Jael Sullivan, was perhaps one of the Irish captives sent over in 1654. They were among the first settlers from Braintree to go to New Shoreham (now Block Island), Washington, Rhode Island about 1661. He worked at the Braintree Iron Works, but settled permanently at New Shoreham (Block Island) where as William Tosh he is mentioned in possession of land sold by Thomas Faxon in 1662. They had 8 children, 2 sons and 6 daughters..and of these born Acres Tosh mentioned in the paper above written by Simon Ray. Apparently before Margery’s marriage to Daniel, she had been guilty of indiscreet conduct with John Rathbon,Jr., son of the first John. However it is quite clear she never married Rathbon(e), for on 10 Jan 1687, he married Anna Dodge.
