Dunbar Prisoners from Lost Lives, New Voices

The following assessment, of which men appearing in New England were prisoners from the Battle of Dunbar and transported on the Unity, is taken from the book produced by the Durham University Scottish Soldiers Project Team:

Christopher Gerrard, Pam Graves, Andrew Millard, Richard Annis, and Anwen Caffell, Lost Lives, New Voices: Unlocking the Stories of the Scottish Soldiers at the Battle of Dunbar 1650, (England: Oxbow Books, 2018). Appendix A, pages 245-256:

Several attempts have been made in the past to identify Scots in New England. This assessment draws on those, particularly the publication of Charles E. Banks and the unpublished work of Everett S. Stackpole, Diane Rapaport and George S. Stewart, with additions to the latter on this site. Stewart’s list is the longest but unfortunately there is no indication of how he arrived at it, nor of the sources of evidence he used.

The names are categorised as:

Definite: men who appear in association with the Saugus Ironworks and are not on the John and Sara list. For fuller discussion and references see Chapter 7 of the Lost Lives, New Voices book.

Probable: men who first appear in records shortly after the likely end of indentures, or who have strong associations with groups of Scots in Oyster River, New Hampshire, York, Maine, or Block Island, Rhode Island, or who are founders of the Scots Charitable Society, and who are not on the John and Sara list.

Possible: men with weaker associations, with a slightly later appearance in the records, who possibly appear on the John and Sara list or where we have failed to find evidence suggestive of their status as Scots and/or prisoners.

Doubtful: men who have been named as Dunbar prisoners, mostly by George S. Stewart, but for whom the evidence seems to show that they arrived in New England other than on the Unity, mostly because they appear on the John and Sara list (see find Worcester POWs in America) or they first appear well after 1660.

Each entry is composed of surname and forenames, residences listed by state, date of first known appearance in New England records, years of birth (B.) and death (D.) based on evidence contemporary with the man, brief notes of interest or justifying the categorization. The sources are abbreviated as follows:

App.B: Probate documents for this man are transcribed in Appendix B [Pages 257-284 in Lost Lives, New Voices)

Andrew Millard of the Scottish Soldiers Project team would be glad to hear of any additional evidence which helps confirm or deny that these men were on the Unity. As new evidence comes to light it is added to the pages on this site. Please check the pages for the relevant men on this site and if you have additional evidence feel free to post on the Scottish Prisoners of War Society email group, or contact him directly by email.
