FROM: Wikipedia “Clan Buchanan”
During the Wars of the Three Kingdoms Sir George Buchanan commanded the Stirlingshire Regiment and led the clan at the Battle of Dunbar (1650) on the side of the Scottish Covenanters.[37] He later led the clan at the Battle of Inverkeithing but here he was captured and died in captivity later the same year.[37] It is claimed that in Buchanan’s Stirlingshire Regiment “most of his officers, and a good many of the soldiers” were of the name Buchanan, and that at the Battle of Inverkeithing a “vast number of the name Buchanan” died.[38] Other Buchanans involved with the Royalist cause include:

  1. David Buchanan, Royalist soldier captured at Worchester. Transported on the John and Sarah, from Gravesend 13 May 1652 to Boston.[39]

“Does anyone have any family history/birthdate etc. on James McNabb. I found him listed on the John & Sarah after the Battle of Worcester in 1651 and his marriage to Sarah Roper in 1669 (Dedham, MA). From there I can follow his family down to my dad but I can’t find anything before the battle about him or his parents/siblings. Would love to know more. Thanks. Cindy.”

wm Mackontoss” was a Scottish Prisoner of War and on the ship John and Sara. See “Scotch Prisoners Sent to Massachusetts in 1652, by Order of the English Government,” The New England Historical and Genealogical Register.

WILLIAM TOSH (or MACINTOSH), m. Jael Sullivan Feb. 7, 1660 says the Braintree record. He is thought to be the William Mackintosh or MacIntosh who was one of the Scottish prisoners sent to New England in 1651 after the Battle of Dunbar [should be Battle of Worcester]. His wife, Jael Sullivan, was perhaps one of the Irish captives sent over in 1654. They were among the first settlers from Braintree to go to New Shoreham (now Block Island), Washington, Rhode Island about 1661. He worked at the Braintree Iron Works, but settled permanently at New Shoreham (Block Island) where as William Tosh he is mentioned in possession of land sold by Thomas Faxon in 1662. I am quite sure that the Supply Wilson mentioned is my ancestor and am trying to determine if the John Wilson of Woburn is also my ancestor. There are a number of John Wilsons–as you might expect–and different sources and trees chose different Johns.”

Sources and Notes:
On 18 Sep 2018, Robert Grant wrote, “I am a direct descendant of Thomas Grant/Graunt from the Battle of Worcester and to America on the John & Sara. The information I have comes primarily from the book Ten Generations of Grants (I have a copy of the book).”

Brian Davis wrote, “My maternal grandmother’s cousin, Myron Scott, authored the book, ‘Ten Generations of Grants,’ published in 1971, which links my ancestry to Thomas Grant, listed as a prisoner from the Battle of Worcester and indentured servant transported on the John and Sarah in 1651. The documentation linking the first generation of Grants to second generation is noted to be sparse. As we discussed, a Y chromosome test from a descendant that is completely patrilineal would be helpful for this group’s research, and eventually establishing that Thomas Grant on the John and Sarah, was the great grandfather of this Captain George Grant, patriot at Valley Forge, participant in the Pompton Mutiny and Whiskey Insurrection:

Mackhome, David., on the John and Sara passenger list in NEHGR; could he be the “David Maccolm in Directory of Scots”…?

Name Variations: Comee, Comey, Comy, Mackhome, Macomey, and McComey.

First Generation in the New World

1. DAVID¹ MACKHOME/COMEY, was born, presumably in Scotland and died in 1676. He married, first, at Woburn/Concord by 1661, ELIZABETH (_____). He married, second, at Charlestown on 6 Sep 1671, HESTER/ESTHER HARVEY.

Sources and Notes:
On 21 Oct 2018, Kenneth Whittemore shared:
“Like a lot of SPOW’s arriving in Boston, on the ‘Unity’ and ‘John and Sara’, identification is complicated, my one identified SPOW from Worcester was David Comee. Only his first name is consistant, also known as MackHome, McComey, Macomey, Comy and Comey. According to Clan MacThomas, four of their people were on the ‘John and Sara’, David MackHome, John MackHolme, Glester MackTomas and Alexander Tompson…what the Clan says about the SPOW list, “The phonetic spelling of the names is based upon what an English speaking recorder thought that he heard the Gaelic speaking Highlanders pronounce. Additionally, the Clan Chief Andrew MacThomas of Finegand suggests that the individual listed as “Glester MackTomas” should perhaps be understood to be “Alistair” as “Glester” does not mean anything and is not a recognizable Scottish Christian name. Therefore, due to the phonetic spelling referenced above, perhaps these four men are better understood to be David McComie, John McColm, Alistair MacThomas and Alexander Thomson” Makes it challenging to perform online searches, even with soundex.”~ Kenneth

SOURCES AND NOTES:

On 4 June 2019, Dr. Andrew Millard posted on the Facebook Group, saying:
“An article in the latest edition of The NEHG Register focusses on David Holmes (Hume) from the John and Sara, giving his children and some grandchildren. His wife was Joan who later married John MacIntosh of Dedham. The article doesn’t discuss MacIntosh’s identity. It seems to me he could be the John Mackenthow also on the John and Sara, but can’t be John Tosh from the Iron Works Inventory, later of Braintree and Block Island.

and … It’s a fairly well documented family. Oliver Wendell Holmes was among his descendants”

On 11 April 2018, Vincent E. Knapp, said:
“David Hume was born most likely in Scotland. Name recorded in early records as Hime, Himes, Hims, Hooms, Home, Homes, Hume as well as Holmes. David is listed among the Scottish prisoners (probably of the Earl of Home’s Regiment of Foot)1 captured at the Battle of Worcester on 3 Sep 1651,2 who were transported to New England on the ship, “John and Sarah”, which left London in November 1651, and arrived in Boston in January 1652. These Scots were indentured for six to eight years to pay for the cost of their transport so few records are available during the term of their indenture. One of the first records of David was his acceptance as an inhabitant of Nipmug (Mendon) on 30 Dec 1663, but there is no record of his ever having lived there. He did buy a house and adjacent land in Milton from Jonathan Gatlive of Boston on 20 Oct 1664. David was living in that house at the time of the purchase. He died 2 Nov 1666.”

My understanding that the John Cowin/Cowen that settled in Scituate and had posterity in America was circumstantially assumed to be the SPOW due to his circumstances. He was apparently sold to Richard Mann, and then married his wife after Richard died. John became a freeman after the marriage.” ~ Andrea Wagenbach
